Twitter Module (Beta)
The requests kept flooding in, so we decided to make a little magic happen. VIRB's Twitter module is just about ready to roll. Yet before we drop it on the world, I wanted to offer it up to you, our faithful blog readers, first. High five!!
Add it to your profile and style it up to your heart's content. Most importantly, let me know (via the comments) if you run into any problems, etc.
Here's how I styled the Twitter module for my profile. As you can see, I went for the gargantuan, tacky text method. :)
NOTE: The first variable is your Twitter ID (number) which can be found on the 'Badge' page of your Twitter account. The second variable is your Twitter Username. That's it.
UPDATE: Click here to copy and paste the module info.

How can we style it?
posted by Jonathan on June 15, 2007 at 4:02am
span#my_twitter_status for the main text span#my_twitter_status_time for the time text does that help?

I'm still not clear on how to style it…I'm sorry for not being in the know :-D

YES! Now if delicious can get up there too… I'll be happy :P

awesome. plain awesome. Though, I was wondering about the styling as well. I'd like to not have the "{time}from Twitter" right after the update. You know, we could get some tasty {br}'s in there for some sweet spaciousness…

This is sweet! So you could actually use the twitter module to keep your page "updated" daily (or as often as you'd like) without having to use a computer and edit your coding. Pretty slick!
Virb Rocks!

try more padding and setting it's display to block.

one thing i've found, is that the twitter module doesn't have a header for it, inconsistent with the rest of the scheme, is this deliberate?

Gargantuan could never be tacky.

AWESOME! virb++

Any reason why you chose spans instead of divs? I really had to get into the code to make it obey (had to throw display:block on the sucker).
It works fine. Now if we can just get some more customization options (# of tweets at the very least), everything will be gravy!

Is it too much if I say I'd much rather have support for Jaiku..
Jaiku is soooo much cooler..!

twitter works for what i want it to do, i don't get the point in jaiku, it's much more complex.
it'll get done as soon as more people want to use it.
posted by Dean Gray on June 17, 2007 at 1:35pm
Yes, Jaiku support would be nice… should the icons be included though…

I am having a hard time getting the Twitter module to work on my profile. If I use the link above to copy and paste the module info, it displays everything (twitter text, time, etc.) all in a straight line in the same size so you can't tell what it actually is.
Can anyone help?

My Twitter module currently says "NaN days ago from Twitter" on a tweet I made this morning. Is this a bug?

Oh cool, it seems to be fixed now. Thanks!

i must be an idiot, but i cannot figure this virb thing out! i tried to add the twitter module, and the code shows up on my profile page. help?

I can't for the life of me make this work. I've stuck it into my html layout and it doesn't seem to want to appear.
My ID is 3368448 and username WildlifeDirect if anyone is willing to give it a try and show me that I'm a complete dunce.
Cheers

As with some other users, I don't have the greatest idea what I'm doing. With Twitter, I know my user name but how do I find out my numerical id number? I looked on the badges page and can't find it. Did Twitter change their website since this was posted or am I an idiot?
Thanks for the help.
posted by Mike on July 8, 2007 at 0:35am
I couldn't find it on the badges page either, but if you click on Your Profile, then go to the bottom and hover over the link for the RSS feed you can see your number at the end of the web address.

This feature rocks. I'm struggling a bit with the padding on the styling, but I'll work it out.
If you're having trouble finding the twitter userid number, just go through the paces of creating a badge for "Other" social networks. Then, when you get to the end where it gives you the tags, look for something like this:
user&id=1234567

Interesting … I've got both the Twitter flash module and the $VIRB_Twitter module on my profile page and the $VIRB_Twitter module is actually more up-to-date than Twitter's own flash module and has remained that way for the past 30 minutes. Fluke?

yall should think about making the music player have an auto-start. that would be sweet. ya know, that you could turn on or off. :)

@amanda/allison/others
To style it like the other modules with default styles:
Because the twitter module isn't wrapped in a div.module, I had to mess around with it a little bit to get it to display like the other modules. First, I created a new custom module called "Kevin is…" without any content in it. Then, using that custom module's ID selector (in my case, it's #content_29886. You can find out by viewing the source of your profile) I set its padding-bottom to 0.
Then, I threw on a display:bock; text-align:left; and padding-bottom:15px; to the span#my_twitter_status selector, and the same thing except padding-bottom:25px; to the span#my_twitter_status_time selector.
In the HTML layout, the custom module is right above the Twitter module in the right hand column.
and @brad/other developers Thanks for all of your effort in this project! I have a small suggestion—it'd be nice to have a little text in the "post a comment" area on this blog that specifies which (if any) HTML tags are allowed. Thanks!

I've noticed that Virb's html and CSS customization is a whole lot more organized and better controled than myspace's. It is a lot more fun(and easier to use). The copy and paste unused module section is very useful and appreciated. Twitter support is just one more thing you did a great job. Keep it up and you'll be the next biggest online thing since Google bought Youtube.

Yeah, I must be an idiot, because I am looking in the code for my badge and there is nothing even remotely close to an ID number to be found.
posted by Leeps on October 16, 2007 at 1:16pm
yeah, i'm with Leeps I think they've changed their badges, so they just need the username now, not the user ID…
I can has update?
