Let's talk about Y-O-U
With each passing day we get closer and closer to the release of the new Virb. Just this morning we had to take a few moments of silence; only to sit in amazement of how well it's coming along. We can't wait to show you!
But for now, I need some help. Many of Virb's new features are centered around you and everything you do online; not just Virb. So, tell me... What exactly are you doing when you are behind the computer? What sites do you use? What social networks do you patron the most? What pieces of your internet life connect with your offline life the most?
To get you started, I'll go first (below). Help me keep it organized by keeping it simple, but your list need not be in any particular order. List as many as you want. If you spend time doing it, I want to know.
Thanks for the cold, hard data. Talk soon...

Hope this stirs some ideas about myself and how I would like my new Virb. I could think of a bunch of new features that would help amazingly for myself. The web is becoming so powerful these days and I can just imagine what it will be like in the future when software and web become ONE. Last.fm is on the right track I think… for example. It would be amazing to see Virb go the same direction. Anywho, I added a * next to my most used/favorites.

Facebook, Pownce, iLike, Flickr, Del.icio.us, Linkedin, Digg, Engadget, MacRumors, Google, Gmail, Ning, and Apple for online.
As a web designer I use: Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, CSS Edit, Textmate, InDesign, iPhoto, Dreamweaver (try not to :).
As a musician: Reason 3.0, sometimes Garageband, iTunes for converting files.
Virb is great for us designers, has the power of CSS templates like Wordpress and Blogger, and the potential for networking like Facebook (I refuse to mention the devil site), and Ning.
Gripes: Needs better searching, allowance for groups for musicians, stronger networking thru genres (Design, Music, etc. plus sub-genres). Also, I love using CSS Edit for building my front-end code, however it works better when the CSS is an imported file, not inline. Makes it harder for setup, especially when skinning friends' sites.
Thanks for a great product!

I've actually thinking earlier that it would be very neat, though maybe unlikely, to make some kind of API so we – if so technically inclined – could host the photos/music on our own webspace, and use virb to display fresh/random stuff and the social networking?
As I said, unlikely, but you used about what sites we use, and I use my homepage mostly.
posted by Johann on September 10, 2007 at 7:55pm
Alright Brad. I must say I'm very out-there on my thoughts. The kinda stuff that would be cool if it just somehow worked, but takes much more work than that. Ill let you guys decide that when the times comes I guess.
—-Twitter—- Well, first off, I forgot to mention Twitter on my list. I use that alot. If we could customize that even more so, that would be cool.
—-Last.fm—- Now I have no idea if you guys are for or against Last.fm in Virb. Seeing how you have VirbTunes, you could very well be trying to push that instead of Last.fm. But idk if thats true or not seeing how yal have Last.fm anyways. BUUUTT. Regardless whatever your for, I would love to see more music stuff. Maybe things like current favorite album, recently bought album, and personal reviews on albums. Also, it would be rad if listening to artists on Virb would count on our VirbTunes. All that said using stuff like cover arts for charts and what-not. I love seeing the us of cover arts.
—-Gmail—- Realistically, I would love to see the use of invites and friend finder using Gmail. Unrealistically, I would love to have my Virb Inbox and Gmail Inbox to become ONE. As in my gmail can be check through Virb and visa versa. Not just an email saying I have a message in Virb, but the actual message they sent, plus the ability to send one back to their Virb Inbox (or Gmail if they have it set up). Plus, idk how hard it would be to somehow integrate Google Talk into Virb as well.
—-Blogger—- Now you already have the whole blog importing done well, but one other feature would be rad to have. If they could select a blog type (Blogger, LiveJournal, WordPress) and enter their username for that blog, so that any comment they make will also travel to the original blog.
—Maps— Virb should start their own, mapping program. Think Twitter + Google maps. It asks the question, where are you? Where have you been? Where are you going? Where would you like to go? Obviously, it would be rad and extremely useful if we could post using our phones.
—-Reader—- If we could have our own customizable reader that shows our shared items, that would be sick.
—-Trillian [Astra]—- This might be hard to do seeing how Trillian 3 is growing old and Trillian 4 (Astra) is taking a while to even get out of Alpha. I just got an invite for Alpha and i must say that I think the public is going to extremely enjoy this new programs new feature. Ultimately, what I am looking for is a way to connect all my connections (AIM, MSN, YAHOO, GTALK, ASTRA, Email, Cell Phone, Web sites) into one. Astra is staring to do that for me. If there is no way to integrate that into Virb, then if you could a least provide a rad way of sharing all those IM's, Email addresses, phone numbers, address, etc, all in one convenient place.
As a wrap up, a dream Virb would be a place that I can send any and everyone, whether on Virb or not, and have them see everything I want them to see. One place. Not ten. I know thats alot, but I thought about this for a while and im a web designer myself so im always trying to think how I could make things better. I did that really fast so if any part is confusing at all, ask me to clarify please. Thanks. ;)

You guys already have a site better than any other social networking site i've been to before so whatever improvements you have in store should only propel all of this into social-networking god status.

One thing I would like to see added is an iPhone app for it. Just for quick checks and viewing simplified profiles. Nothing crazy. :) This is the best networking site around, in my opinion. Great stuff!!! Can't wait to see the new features.

always first thing for me: GoogleReader.
I read my own subscriptions, but more importantly I read the mashup/collective feeds i have with my friends and loved ones. I used Yahoo Pipes to combine del.ici.ous RSS feeds for tags we specifically created for the mashup with site feeds from multiple related sources, including flickr feeds for certain tagged items. Then we all subscribed to that feed. When we want to add to it we tag posts in GReader. Every day I start out reading all the stuff people I know think are interesting and relevant.
This is the kind of group activity I'd LOVE to see here on VIRB: collections of related content easily grabbed through the readily available feeds that come from searched items in the web services already mentioned in the above posts. I'd like to see some actual community activity through by like minded people creating information streams that are semi-automatically generated. (man you guys could half way accomplish this just by having the much begged for RSS feed module! But it'd be so much more awesome as a integrated feature of VIRB)
TAGGING and FEEDS, you guys.
Imagine if everyone interested in say Indie Crafting could gather related feeds, links and articles from all over the web have them automatically dumped (through feeds or an app (where's that API, you guys?) ) in a module that showed up on their "your home" page. Maybe VIRB could gather some of that on the backend through internal tagging of photos and posts (like Flickr). And then allow Virbers to comment on and discuss the content, arrange local craft events through VIRB and have online group chats about the material. Share Instructables. etc. just one possible scenario.
I always loved Tribe.com for the community they had and thought they could have made it more of a social networky type thing. I'd love to see some of that interaction and community on here.
I hate to say this because I do love you guys and have been a vocal supporter for a while now but… the site seems pretty stale. Groups are just little badges to show what you're into on your profile page- in action they are laaaame here. My profile page just feels like a dead vanity plate. I want more interaction than getting friend requests that say someone thinks my layout is cool. sigh.
Just my 2 cents.

I would say Facebook, but I'm not really sure what purpose you guys would have to develop with their platform. But, definitely Facebook.
Slightly off-topic:
I'm sure you're already on this one, but if you made an iPhone version of Virb, I'd be on it more.
A feature that I think could really take off in this environment of creative-types would be some sort of kudos/digg feature focusing on individual profiles- ie: if the profile is a "Fashion" profile, they get likes/dislikes based on that and there's an overall chart of "most interesting profiles by category based on virb members". I've found some pretty cool companies while hunting through Virb, but I get lazy and don't want to keep searching through friends of friends profiles to find the cream of the crop.
posted by jared - AKT on September 12, 2007 at 10:01pm
Virb's blog has more activity than the entire site.. therein lies the major problem with Virb. As Leesa stated, Virb is as stale as some old ricecakes. I really think it was overhyped. Most folks register and play with the profile, but they are not active. It has potential, but still needs alot of work. Good luck with version 2.

Aw, now I feel like a nay saying downer.
Yes it feels kinda stale around here but I think some of the new hotness will make it feel more alive soon.
I know this sounds kinda nebulous but the bottom line is that people need to get some sort of biscuit when they push the lever, you know? There has to be a user reward for visiting or using Virb that goes beyond the "look at me and my css skills" factor or they stop pushing the lever.
I want to be able to add to and interact with Virb as I do with all the other sites everyone is listing. We need some "Add to VIRB" action, as with Digg, del.icious, ThisNext, wishlists and swagrolls, and all the other bookmarklet goodies that get folks using a service. I"d love a button up there in my toolbar that adds awesomeness to Virb no matter where I am online.
Hyped up team-ups on your part like Flickr + Moo wouldn't hurt either (Moo Cards based on your profile page would rock, no?) Eh, I'm just saying things like that get people excited.
People just want to be stimulated. Once they are I think they'll will start updating and answering announcements more regularly because they'll have a lot of reasons to visit every day. Most of the staleness rests on the shoulders of lazy users (myself included), I guess I need that shiny biscuit to get me interacting.
I can't wait to see what you guys have for us, I love what I have from you so far.

Some users don't have handles, screenames or aliases. Some don't mind who visit their profiles. In other words, search engine listing. I'm not suggesting sponsored links like Ziki but if you plan on letting us aggregate our own blogs into a Virb hosted blog then I would certainly want it cataloged. Just a thought.

I really like the current integration with Flickr. You could do similar stuff for YouTube and more. I myself use one or more of the following sites almost every day – and could enjoy some Virb integration with them:
* Newsvine (allow various feeds, please. I even consider doing a Newsvine engined magazine here at Virb. Also, consider doing something with Nowpublic.com) * Last.fm (!!!) * IMDb * Hattrick.org (football (soccer) manager game, clost to 1 million users world wide) * Blogger/Blogspot.com
How about an easy calendar thing – one that could subscribe to online iCal / Google Calendars etc. Likely already doable by Google's own HTML generator and some feeds though.

I'm sure it's too late for feature requests, but I would really love to incorperate my blog from another site onto this one. It's doing well and I don't want to keep two of them.

Obviously I'm excited for verb cause it appears like it will combine wordpress, myspace, and youtube much better. MySpace has tried but i'm tired of horrible <table> layouts, and ready for some nice and easy to edit <div> :).
much love, virb, much love, css :).

I like a place to put all my audio, text, video and photographs and have control over who gets to see what content while getting feedback and having live web interaction.
I think users make the site worth coming back to. Websites should make sure that the interface/technology make the site simple and easy to use. sites I use and where I interact with other users:
*YouTube- they need to find a better way of showcasing newer members, stop whoring their PAID partner members and rid of all that spamming going on. I really like the sense of community that users have taken on upon themselves by getting together at gatherings.
*Stickam(live web community) -. with webcams…the inevitable are the pervies. which is sad because it's a real great way to communicate!
*Hanson.net – yes! the band of 3 brothers from Oklahoma who sang MmmBop a decade ago! by far has a great online community base with a strong participation in their forums.
*Facebook – they've done a great job at being sensitive to their users' privacy and I applaud them for issuing a statement before they made it optional for users' profiles to be made available in search engines.
* Slide- really easy to use, great custom options for showing photographs however they need to work on the privacy of those photos. I'd like to see a better way to share professional photographs without having them get right-clicked and copied.
Other sites I use: Gmail. Google.TV-Links.TheOnion. PostSecret.
I'm a big magazine dork. If I don't pick up a magazine at a stand I'll usually check out their website: Wired. Inc. Howdesign. FastCompany. to name a few.
share anything at any moment… you should have a way we could upload text, audio, video and photographs from our cell phones, smartphones whatever you wanna call it.

Please remove the limit for pictures, I love sharing pictures on here. :) I don't care about uploading videos, but 1 or 2 might be nice. I just think that 150 is not enough. I need like 15000. (MySpace & Facebook both let you have unlimited photos.) Tagging friends & adding notes (like Facebook and Flickr) would be nice too.
Please do something with Twango too, everyone is obsessed with Flickr, but who cares. I use Twango.
Do not try to be more like MySpace, Virb is awesome in it's own way, and I'm making up excuses for people to get Virb and ditch MySpace.
And there isn't much that needs to be done to be like Digg.

myspace, blog.mac (for my website), ichat, flickr, ebay. myspace got big because of music. i'd like to see virb open up the options for how musicians/bands/music orgs can use music on their pages. for example, i'm a music org and yet i'm unable to add any music unless an artist has already done so. virb could have a better music section where they promote different stuff each week… a bit like the itunes store home page. again looking at myspace, people also like to promote club nights. virb could exand on their club listings. i'd also like to see more development posibilities for illustrators, create an arena for them similar to what flickr does for photographers.

i think it would be cool if you can put links of interest in categories. like for photography list ones that are separated from people's personal sites. something like that would be good for me. maybe links to stock photography, where to purchase, etc. i think if links are there and organized in a way that isn't too cluttery, then it could work.

Just my 2 cents but I seriously hope that you're going to avoid what happened to (dare I utter the word here….MySpace), and now Facebook and have everybody's profile's cluttered up (I'm sure you won't but just wanna check).
Facebook started out fine but then they released this API and now I barely visit it just because of the number of pointless timewasting "applications" such as that Vampire one etc.
The fantastic thing about Virb is its simplicity. It's straight forward, looks, feels and works cleanly and I sincerely hope that continues.
I don't want to have 300 alerts everyday about rubbish, I don't want to view somebody's profile and have to scroll through a load of junk like 'Bob has Bitten you. You are now a Vampire!" and "Julie has sent you an Alien for your SPACE WALL!" I don't even want options to disable them. I just don't want you guys to turn Virb into yet another social site that I will tire of quickly.
I understand that you have to do certain things to compete, but you're biggest advantage over the competition that I can see is the fact Virb is clean and simple.
Keep it that way!

LEESA: Thanks for keeping up. I know things have been kinda quiet about the new Virb. Part of that is intentional and part of that is just cause we've been so busy. We're on the downhill slope now and some first looks will start showing up soon.
MEWITHOUTJEAN: We're implementing some new spam measures into Symphony later this week. If that doesn't squash the spam bug, I might take you up on that. :)
KEIR: Point noted. I'd also like to take this paragraph to let everyone reading know that despite the upcoming increase in the amount of features and feeds on Virb, our focus and attention to the design has not changed at all. I think when you see what we've done with the new site you will like it even more than version number one. Back to work. We have a website to build for you.

Simply gotta have this-
http://developer.yahoo.com/maps/flash/asGettingStarted.html
A box that I can embed my Flickr maps into, and I am sure this has all kinds of other bits of usefulness for working with Yahoo stuff. Which is probably not a bad idea.
Other than that, Google News, getting quite caught up in Facebook, but too much drink buying and poking. Its like they took college kids and older and dumbed them down. It doesnt work on facebook, but that little thing with links dynamically updating to a screenshot of the linked page would be dope. If it worked. Once a day thumbnail generation thing, or even one time.
ESPN is big for me, and CNNSI. A great thing for a profile might be for you to be able to display your feeds in your page. Does something do that already? Or an easy way to publish them from your reader.
Thunderbird for reading RSS feeds and mail (gmail). Obviously would be great to start an email and have it blog in virb, but that would require syncing with and sending pics to a Flickr account. A Thunderbird extension for that? Not a fan of web-based email, in fact would like to get comments and virbmail in an email that I hit an approve button in. If it has to spawn a new Virb page, fine, but I'd rather get a second email that I could filter.
And I used to get Pandora until the latest ruling, so now that I am out of the country thats out. Everyone I introduce to Pandora loves it; would be cool to sync some kind of music to the player. With a big fat WARNING BOX that loads first thing so people can shut off the music if they want..
