Hello future, meet Virb

Hello my fellow Virbers! Hope you've been well. We've been a little busy; but dandy, nevertheless. As you are probably aware, we've been neck deep in the new version of a site we like to call VIRB. For that very reason, it's been a little quiet 'round ye olde bloglands.

I wanted to take some time to say hello and let you know this blog is never far from my heart. We're embarking on the home stretch here and, as you know, patience is always rewarded! This means that you'll be reading (and seeing) much more over the next couple of weeks.

My plan is to post one new update every week or so. They will likely focus on a new or (re-engineered) piece of Virb. It's been a rebuild from the ground up, so even the smallest of things are exciting to us.

We cannot wait for you to see Virb's new Recent Activity feature. From photos and videos to all the things you share online, Virb will be the one place where others can keep up with everything you do - no matter where you do it. We'll also look at the new email Conversation system, profile customization enhancements, new Group tools and another surprise or three.

In other news, we have recently launched a little t-shirt shop called Cottyn. It was a simple project to keep us sane by offering some fresh air outside of Virbland. There are five tees to start, with more being rolled out on a regular basis. You can peek if you'd like.

Love,
Stephen, Dave, Simmy, Rubin and Me

P.S. I posted a couple of photos on Virb. They're a small glimpse at the future of Virb's Recent Activity, Contribute and Profile Skins. Enjoy!

Ah. Very nice. A breath of fresh air, and I think I might try one of those shirts. ;)

I'm loving that Twitter one! Ha. I just don't how many people will actually understand that one.

posted by mewithoutjean on October 24, 2007 at 7:15pm

Question Brad:

1) Is there a way we can attempt to submit shirt designs to Cottyn? Cause there ARE more nerds out there than just you guys. Hence the NOOB shirts.

2) How can we get a hold of private beta testings for the new Virb?

posted by mewithoutjean on October 24, 2007 at 7:39pm

This excites me.

But, I will miss the current Virb. :(

You'll do a lot more than that once you see the final version (and I doubt you'll miss the current Virb)!

Hey is the css or layout customization stuff going to change?

I'm building some layouts and if you guys are going to pull a myspace and change a bunch of stuff that will break it, a heads up would be good.

i'll reserve judgement but at the moment i'm a bit underwhelmed.

posted by Manny on October 26, 2007 at 3:30am

Is Virb sponsored by Mac graphical interfaces? :-) (ok, I know / guess you aren't but these look nice)

posted by Lymf on October 26, 2007 at 7:15am

@Mark It's possible you may have some tiny tweaks to make…with emphasis on the 'tiny'.

posted by Teevio on October 26, 2007 at 0:04am

@Teevio Thanks for the heads up. that's all i needed. you guys rock by the way.

posted by Mark on October 26, 2007 at 2:26pm

Underwhelmed is right. This site has been way overhyped from the beginning. After months of work, all you have to show is a tabbed menu? This is why you guys are late in the game and left in the dust.

How and when can we get on to the nu virb?

@Michael: We're hoping to have it in your hands as an early Christmas present. :)
@Dan: Oh, Dan. You made me laugh. Of course I have much more to show. We have a brand-spankin' new Virb; but being mean won't get you anything…

posted by Brad on October 28, 2007 at 9:52pm

I personaly think the new interface totally stinks… pfffwaaaa !! Couldn't say that with a straight face. Of course the new Virb is going to be amazing, and I've been waiting for like two months to see those screenshots. Can't wait for the real thing…

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's been 2 weeks now since you've posted this. You said you'd update us every week or so… But with my luck you will be posting an update tomorrow haha

posted by Jeremy on November 7, 2007 at 4:36am

Once again, sorry to burst your bubble, and I am sure you guys n' gals are working on it like crazy behind the scenes. But it's been Well over a month now and we haven't gotten a single update. Not even a simple "We're still working on it". Please at least give us something once in a while. Continue this, and I personally do not think a lot of people will stick around, because on our end (at least mine) it seems like you are doing nothing for VIRB while MySpace for once is actually doing something and adding new features somewhat frequently. Still not comparable with VIRB on the ease of use and looks side, but they are starting to pull ahead on the features side :(

posted by Jer on December 1, 2007 at 5:06pm

Jeremy: If what you are looking for is a "we're working on it", then I'll tell you right now: We're working on it. We've been doing nothing more for the past 5 months. The team is getting very close and we are more than very excited. It's too bad that sparse blog updates is all it took to squelch your excitement.

I think a lot of people will be "sticking around, if I post 5 updates a week or not. Even without version 2, Virb is already an incredible place. I think you'll find most people can be found spending time on it rather than complaining on the blog.

I'm here, I'm listening – and I'm responding. If you'd like, you can drop me an email to voice any concerns. It's brad at virb. I'll be happy to email you back. Hang in there Jer, it's gonna be worth the wait and agony. ;)

P.S. I'd be interested to see what kind of feedback you would get from the project manager at myspace.

P.P.S. As soon as we are ready to let some secrets out of the virb bag and start showing off some prettiness, you know this will be the first place I'll show. True story.

posted by Brad on December 1, 2007 at 6:50pm

On here? Why not in our own profiles? hehe.

Anyway, sorry I didn't mean to sound like I'm not excited for it anymore. I just hate it when companies say "We'll give you updates" and never do and leave their visitors in the dark. It's hard to see… My eyes don't adjust well :( :P

posted by Jer on December 2, 2007 at 0:06am

I hope you guys get in on Open Social… and add a blog API/RSS control (so we can use feedburner)

Anyways, yeah, I already sent my suggestions in… but I'm jsut so excited! :)

hey thats awesome cant wait :-)

virb seems pretty lifeless at the moment. i'm thinking of closing my account… i dont quite see the point of it. there's been no update for weeks, so i dont know what you're planning.. if it's no more than cosmetic changes and a couple of "what are you doing right now"type inaniites then i think that's the end. please prove me wrong

"It's too bad that sparse blog updates is all it took to squelch your excitement."

The sparse blog updates are squelching my excitement. Not gonna lie… but im still sticking around.

posted by Nolan D. on December 28, 2007 at 2:21pm

Yea. I was looking forward to seeing Virb2.0 before Christmas. So needless to say I'm a tad disappointed. And I really wish there was at least a blog update on where everything is at. I just like to be in the know like, "Hey guys, this is what we are currently working on, and this is how its going". If not this blog then why not some Twitter updates that at clearly dedicated to the small things you guys are currently working on.

Other than that, I'm still looking forward to the new Virb. And I'm really excited to see what you guys will come up with.

posted by Nate on December 28, 2007 at 6:00pm

I was also really looking forward to the nu virb b4 Christmas so since that obviousley didn't happen can you giv us a nu date please

posted by Michael on December 28, 2007 at 9:19pm

We're getting close, but not close enough to offer up Virb 2 as a Holiday treat. When we are ready to drop it, you will know. It won't be a quiet launch.

Tell ya what… During my downtime this weekend, I will get some freshness your way. Don't be expecting a full disclosure, though. We're trying to keep a lot of the new features quiet until right before launch. However, I'll offer up proof that your 5 Virb Soldiers are alive, kicking and busy as hell.

posted by Brad on December 28, 2007 at 10:03pm

awesome thank you soooooooo much

Today's 'freshness' post was conceived under the assumption that I would have access to Wi-Fi in the airport. Yet Memphis Int'l isn't showing me any love. Will be back at my desk in Virbland tomorrow. Freshness. For you. Then.
